Easy Nando’s Chicken Fakeaway with Peri-Peri Chips

Easy Nando’s Chicken Fakeaway with Peri-Peri Chips

Jump to Recipe

A Friday-night takeaway is hard to beat, particularly when you have reached the end of a busy week and do not feel like cooking. Unfortunately, ordering chicken and chips for the whole family can make quite a dent in the weekly food budget.

This easy Nando’s chicken fakeaway is one of my favourite compromises. We still get a tasty Friday-night dinner, but it costs considerably less than ordering a takeaway.

It is deliberately simple. I use Nando’s Peri-Peri Bag & Bake seasoning for the chicken, frozen oven chips and homemade coleslaw. There is very little preparation, everything cooks together, and nobody feels as though they are missing out.

Why You’ll Love This Nando’s Fakeaway

  • Easy enough for a Friday evening
  • Much cheaper than ordering a family takeaway
  • Uses a small number of ingredients
  • Ready in approximately 30 minutes
  • Easy to adapt with different sides
  • Feeds four generously

Ingredients

  • 1kg chicken breast fillets
  • 2 Nando’s Medium Peri-Peri Bag & Bake seasoning packs
  • 1.25kg frozen oven chips
  • Peri-peri salt, to taste
  • A little vegetable or sunflower oil
  • Homemade coleslaw, to serve

You do not have to use the Nando’s branded packs to make this fakeaway. Plenty of supermarkets and other brands now sell peri-peri chicken mixes, shake bags, seasoning packets and seasoning shakers. Choose whichever version suits your budget and preferred spice level, then prepare and cook the chicken according to the instructions on the packet.

How to Make Nando’s Chicken and Chips at Home

Preheat the oven according to the instructions on the Bag & Bake packet.

Cut the chicken fillets into large, evenly sized pieces. Divide the chicken between the two cooking bags, add the seasoning and follow the packet instructions to close and shake the bags.

Place the bags on a baking tray and cook the chicken according to the packet directions. Make sure it is piping hot and completely cooked through before serving.

While the chicken is cooking, place the frozen chips on a separate baking tray. Drizzle them with a little oil and sprinkle generously with peri-peri salt. Toss the chips until the seasoning is evenly distributed.

The cooking temperature on the chip packet may be slightly different, but I cook the chips alongside the chicken rather than leaving the oven running for longer. Check them halfway through and give the tray a good shake so that they cook evenly.

What to Serve with a Nando’s Fakeaway

Serve the peri-peri chicken and chips with homemade coleslaw or charred corn. You could also add burger buns and turn the chicken into easy peri-peri chicken burgers.

When I originally costed this dinner, it came to £10.29 for four people, or approximately £2.57 per person. Ingredient prices have changed since then, but making this fakeaway at home should still cost considerably less than buying four restaurant meals.

This is not elaborate cooking. It is simply a quick, enjoyable fakeaway dinner that helps us resist ordering food when we are tired on a Friday evening.
