- 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (225 g) granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1½ cups (185 g) self-rising flour
- ⅓ cup (40 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
Chocolate Topping
- 5 oz (150 g) semi-sweet cooking chocolate
- 2 tablespoons (25 g) unsalted butter
- Chocolate sprinkles, optional
How to Make Chocolate Traybake Slices
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
Grease and line an 8-inch (20 cm) square pan. - Cream the butter and sugar until pale and soft.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and cocoa powder.
- Gently fold the dry ingredients into the batter until fully combined.
The mixture should be thick and smooth, not runny. - Spoon the batter into the pan and spread evenly into the corners.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean or with a few soft crumbs.
- Leave the cake in the pan for 10 minutes.
Then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Chocolate Topping
- Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl.
- Set the bowl over gently simmering water.
- Stir until melted and smooth.
- Let the chocolate cool for 2–3 minutes.
- Spread evenly over the cooled cake.
- Add sprinkles while the topping is still soft, if using.
- Leave at room temperature until fully set.
