Easy McMuffin Recipes: Homemade Sausage and Egg McMuffins

Jump to Recipe

This easy sausage and egg McMuffin copycat is a brilliant weekend breakfast for the whole family. It has all the familiar parts of a McDonald’s breakfast muffin: a toasted muffin, sausage patty, fried egg and melted cheese.

Taking the children through the drive-thru can quickly become expensive. Even allowing around £5 per person for breakfast, feeding a family of four could cost at least £20. By using affordable supermarket ingredients, you could potentially make a whole plate of homemade McMuffins for approximately £6–£7.

Prices will depend on where you shop and the ingredients you choose, but this McDonald’s breakfast fakeaway should still cost considerably less than buying individual meals.

    Why Make McMuffins at Home?

Homemade McMuffin recipes are quick, filling and easy to adapt. You can use your family’s favourite sausages, choose whichever cheese you already buy and cook the eggs exactly as everyone likes them.

They are a particularly good option for a relaxed Saturday or Sunday breakfast. The children still get something that feels like a treat, but there is no drive-thru queue and no large takeaway bill.

You can also cook several sausage patties at once. This means everyone can sit down to eat together rather than waiting for one breakfast muffin at a time.

How to Make a Sausage McMuffin Copycat

Start by removing the skins from the sausages. Shape the sausage meat into balls and flatten each one into a round patty.

Make the patties slightly wider than the muffins because they will shrink a little while cooking. If the sausage meat sticks to your hands or chopping board, use a light dusting of plain flour.

Cook the sausage patties in a frying pan over a medium heat, turning regularly until completely cooked through. While the patties finish cooking, split and toast the muffins and fry the eggs.

Place a cooked sausage patty onto the bottom half of each toasted muffin. Add a cheese single and fried egg, followed by ketchup or brown sauce if you like.

Add the muffin top and serve immediately while the sausage is hot and the cheese is beginning to melt.
