Chilli seasoning recipe
This easy chilli seasoning mix is a simple homemade blend of herbs and spices that you can keep in the cupboard ready for chilli night.
Chilli seasoning recipe
I started making my own homemade chilli seasoning using spices I already had in the kitchen. I don’t like chilli so hot that you can’t taste anything else, but I definitely want enough warmth to know I’m eating chilli.
This blend gives me that balance. It’s warming and well flavoured without being extremely hot, and you can easily adjust the amount you add to suit your own chilli.
You’ll find the exact quantities in the printable recipe card below.

Why Make Your Own Chilli Seasoning?
Keeping a jar of homemade chilli spice mix in the cupboard means you don’t need to buy a seasoning sachet every time you make chilli.
It also gives you more control over the flavour.
Shop-bought chilli seasoning commonly combines spices such as paprika, cumin, chilli or cayenne with onion and garlic. Some commercial mixes also contain additional ingredients including flour, starch and sugar. (Ocado)
Making your own means you can start with a basic blend and adjust it to your family’s taste.
How Hot Is This Chilli Spice Mix?
I would describe this as warm rather than extremely hot.
If you like a hotter chilli, you can experiment with adding more chilli powder, cayenne or chilli flakes. I’d recommend making the basic mixture first and adjusting future batches once you know how hot you like it.
Remember that you can always add more seasoning to your chilli as it cooks. It’s considerably harder to take it back out.
Using Homemade Chilli Seasoning
Give the spices time to cook into your chilli rather than adding the seasoning right at the end.
I like to add a little seasoning first, let the chilli cook and then taste before deciding whether it needs more.
There is no sugar added to my chilli seasoning mix. If I want some sweetness in the finished chilli, I prefer to adjust that while I’m making the tomato sauce rather than adding sugar to the spice jar.
A Quick Note About Salt
If you’re adapting the recipe, pay attention to the type of salt you’re using and start cautiously. You can always season the finished chilli further.
Also check that you’re using garlic powder or granules and onion powder or granules, rather than garlic salt or onion salt. Otherwise you can very quickly end up with far more salt in the mixture than you intended.
Storing Chilli Seasoning Mix
Mix the spices together and keep your homemade chilli seasoning in a clean, airtight spice jar or small container in a cool, dry cupboard.
Make a batch whenever your jar starts getting low and you’ll have an easy chilli seasoning mix ready whenever chilli is on the meal plan.
