Make Your Own Chilli Spice Mix

This is our homemade chilli spice mix.

Homemade chilli spice mix

Heat

I dont like an extremely hot chilli spice mix but I definitely like to know that I am having chilli. I have made this using what I had in the kitchen already and added in my favourite flavours. If you have different chilli powder or different red pepper or chilli flakes you can experiment with them instead to get a hotter spice mix.

This mix is warm and hot but not extremely hot.

Sweetness

I have not added any sugar into this mix. When I make my chilli sauce I add sweetener into the tomato sauce. It is up to you how much of this flavouring you use in your chilli. It is quite highly flavoured so add a little as you go and build up the flavour you want.

Spices

Make sure you give your spices time to cook and don’t add any of this mix too close to the end of your cooking time otherwise you may get an earthy taste which can be unpleasant.

Salt

I used pink Himalayan salt but if you have another rock salt you can use that either. If you are using table salt I strongly suggest that you use less than is in this recipe. Table salt is a much sharper taste than pink salt or sea salt.

Onion and Garlic Powders

Check the labels on your onion and garlic powders that they are not onion or garlic salt. Those powders will overload the mix with saltiness. Go for granules or powders.
