Easy Home Chocolate Cake For 15p A Slice

Cheap chocolate cake

This easy homemade chocolate cake is a BBC recipe which you can find here.ย The BBC food website is a great resource for all sorts of fantastic family friendly recipes and you should check it out.

I am sharing it with you on my blog as I want to share the steps I use to make this cake. It has become a firm favourite in our family. Its a go to for birthdays and for weekends when the house is going to be busy.

What I like about this cake is that is it a generous size and lasts for about 5 days. No fancy equipment is needed to make this cake at all which is great for keeping costs down.

It is very moist, giving it an almost muffin like texture. This is a cake you’ll need to hide or ration from your family if you are aiming to actually make it last for several days. I’ve found kids breaking into the fridge late at night to grab another slice of this several times over the years.

I usually make this cake with own brand ingredients and when I do, the full cost of the cake is ยฃ1.86. Cut into 12 slices this cake costs 15p per slice!

We love a cost comparison! Local tea rooms charge approximately ยฃ3 for a slice of chocolate cake. The whole tea room cake would cost ยฃ36 to buy. We can make 19 cakes for the price of one in the tearooms. These are the kinds of savings that really move the needle when you are saving money and still want to enjoy life.

Ingredients For The Chocolate Cake

Chocolate cake ingredients

225g plain or all purpose flour

350g caster sugar

85g cocoa powder

1.5 teaspoons of baking powder

1.5 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda

2 eggs

250ml of milk

125ml vegetable oil

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

250ml boiling water

Chocolate cake topping

200g dark chocolate

200ml double cream

Step 1

Pre-heat your oven before you begin. Gas Mark 4 / 180C / 160C Fan Oven. You will need two 20cm sandwich cake tins. They should be greased.

Step 2

Put all of the ingredients into a mixer EXCEPT the boiling water which you should hold back till all the other ingredients are well combined.

Step 3

Then add the boiling water little by little. This cake mix resembles thick hot chocolate once so don’t worry if it looks too liquid, its supposed to be like that. See the video below for further details.

Step 4

Pour equal amounts of cake mix into the greased cake tins and bake in a preheated oven for 30+ minutes. You’ll know its ready once you skewer the cake and the skewer comes out clean. Leave the cakes in the tins to fully cool.

Step 5

The cake topping is very simple to make. It is a ganache icing which is really delicious! Heat the chocolate and the cream over a saucepan of water till the chocolate is melted into the cream. Whisk till the icing looks like a spreadable butter. Take care not to over heat or over mix the icing. Allow the cake topping to set in the fridge for 2 hours.

Step 6

Ice the cake and serve with ice cream, cream or chocolate sauce. Enjoy!

Notes: This cake mixture is a liquid. Use a suitable cake tin and not one that can leak such a spring form one!

I hope you enjoy making this cake as much as I do ( and as much as everyone in my family enjoys eating it!)
