Hi everyone,
I hope you’re keeping well and enjoying October.
I’ve been having a little clear-up around the house ready for Halloween, which made me think about all the things we used to do when my children were younger.
Mine aren’t little or getting dressed up anymore, but I still decorate the house and we still have trick-or-treaters at the door. I don’t think Halloween has changed so much that children today wouldn’t enjoy many of the same simple activities.
So, I’ve gathered some of my favourite inexpensive ideas, along with three very cute Halloween treats I found on Pinterest. Nothing scary, just a few sweet ideas for enjoying Halloween without spending a fortune.

Simple Halloween Activities You Can Do For Cheap Or Free
- Bobbing for apples and other old fashioned Halloween games. I found a lovely blog about all those old games here.
- Make your own classic DIY Halloween outfits including the oldies such as raiding your grandads wardrobe to become a scare crow or a white sheet with holes cut for eyes for a friendly Halloween ghost.
- Colouring in-let your kids decorate the house with their art work! All you really need here is Halloween coloured crayons and some colouring in sheets (grab the free ones below if you need some!)

- Make your own decorations. Such as cut out and cheerful little bats with google eyes, or pumpkin-bunting or little floating ghosts strung up around the house.
- Baking: Depending on your kids ages you could make simpler or more complicated recipes. Pinterest is your friend if you need recipes. I gathered three for you to try below.
3 Non-Scary Halloween Themed Sweet Treats
I’ve had a prowl (pardon the Halloween themed pun 🎃) around Pinterest for some simple Halloween sweet treats that you could make with the kids. This list is a good mix of levels of difficulty to suit all ages.
- Cute Rice Krispy Ghosts. This is from the really cool website Kid Friendly Things to Do.
- Easy Halloween Cute Cookies-This is from the super helpful Partylicious website.
- Cute popcorn gloves.-These are from Kitchen Tips Blog
I have been pinning on Pinterest more recently and have been loving it. Are you a Pinterest fan? Pop over and give us a follow if it’s your thing.
Our Family-Friendly Halloween Movie Hit List
Get the colouring pages out, make some popcorn and choose a film for a simple Halloween evening at home.
- Room on the Broom
A lovely, gentle choice for younger children. It’s short, funny and not frightening. - Hotel Transylvania
Plenty of Halloween characters, silly humour and nothing too serious. This one works well for different ages. - Hocus Pocus
A proper Halloween classic for older children and adults. It’s a little more spooky, so use your own judgement with younger viewers.
These movies are cute, funny and mildly scary here and there. If you can find them for free anywhere that would be a budget bonus.
See You Next Week
Between homemade sweet treats, inexpensive decorations, dressing-up outfits, colouring pages, baking ideas and a Halloween film night, there is plenty here to enjoy over the Halloween break. You may even be able to have a no-spend or low-spend Halloween!
I’d love to hear what you have planned. The comments are open below, so please share your own inexpensive/free/old fashioned Halloween ideas with us.
Have a lovely Halloween!
